strength training
introduction
This chapter is about training your strength. For most people the term "strength" is a little abstract. You may now think of bodybuilders or huge fellows lifting a car or something like that. Others think of athletes performing on the highest level in a certain kind of sports. Yes, that´s strength, but even sitting in your chair in a proper position for a while without having back pain or taking a number of files to the third floor is a result of physical strength. Totally different level, same principle: working muscles.
definition
Muscular strength is defined as the ability to overcome resistance. This ability can be improved by performing exercises on a certain, unusual high level to force your body to build muscle, to become tighter and stronger. The most common way of training is working against certain resistance levels. This can be done with free weights like dumbbells or barbells, on machines, with bodyweight exercises, elastic bands or any other kind of resistance.
importance
Your body needs muscles! Every motion you do, from running to the bus stop to carrying your furniture is based on the cooperation of your muscles, joints, tendons, bones, nerves and so on. Unfortunately the human body is very economical. If you don´t train the interaction of all of these elements, you´ll loose it. Did you ever notice the diffenrence in the posture and gesture of people that move on a regular basis and so called "couch potatoes"? Guess you did. Our bodies were designed to move, not just once in a while but every day. If you don´t do it, you loose your muscular tension, your flexibility, your metabolism drops and finally you´ll begin to have all these aches and pains, to grow fat and to age faster than a peach in the sun.
Keeping your body in shape is one of the greatest gifts to make. It´s the key for an enjoyable life. Nothing counts if you feel sickly and tired all day long. Wanne be the richest man on the graveyard? No? So move and put a regular demand on your physique.
initial start
The best and smartest way to start is attending a gym, because there you have a great variety of possibilities, skilled fitness professionals that will help you to achieve your goals or, prior to that, help you to even define realistic and motivational goals.
You can also hire a personal trainer. That´s a great option for people with little time and/or very specific requirements. As the name tells, a personal trainer will individually lead you through the whole process of goal setting, workout planning, testing and re-testing as well as nutrition planning and continuous motivation.
training options
Whatever you want to achieve, you need both, muscular and cardiovascular training. Our muscular training guidelines include a permanently growing collection of the best weight training exercises in the gym or outdoors including many stretching exercises.
